Spirited Away : : Apr 07 2003
Jess and I went to see Miyazaki's Spirited Away at the movie theater on April 7th. I can't believe Disney is the one releasing it. Ah well. We went to Red Robin for dinner first (and I got my usual gardenburger and craziness-inducing strawberry lemonade), and then we took the bus to the theater on TV Highway.
When we got off at our stop, we noticed a guy carrying an entire box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Now that's a snack.
We were early, so we bought our tickets and headed over to the Goodwill which is next to the theater. It's a freaky Goodwill -- everything is just laid out in bins, and you sift through it and then pay by the pound. There was a lot of junk -- broken glass items, entire boxes-worth of puzzle-pieces, and much crap. Up at the front I found a Portland Opera CD and a Discovery Channel documentary on sharks though. Yay! I grabbed a CD-Rom game for Windows, My Little Pony... no idea if it will work, but it was ubercheap so I don't care. We also got several other wonderful prizes, spending less than five dollars in total.
Jess found a vase she wanted, and then I found her the ultimate prize -- a quilted cow.
As you can see, it is quite adorable. And quilted.
A tiny chicken is a death sentence. It's a chicken, and it's tiny.
Behold! The mythical flat unicorn!
When we got to the movie, we were the only people in the entire theater. It was both nice and kind of sad at the same time -- Spirited Away is such a good movie, it should've had major crowds. Hrmph. About ten minutes into the movie, some teenage guy came in and plopped in front of us, and asked, "What's happened so far?" I tried to sum it up (it's an anime, egads!) in (SPOILERS!!) "The dad took a wrong turn, and they ended up in this alternate world which he thought was an abandoned theme park and the parents ate the food there and got turned into pigs." Ta da!
The movie was, of course, excellent. Afterwards, the guy in front tried to strike up a conversation. He didn't know that the director was the same for Princess Mononoke, Kiki and Totoro, though apparently he'd seen all three. As we were leaving the theater, he took off across the parking lot, and Jess and I looked at each other and said, "Is that -- Cinnamon Toast Crunch guy?" and cracked up.
We went to five places trying to find Popeye with Robin Williams to rent or buy, and couldn't find it anywhere. Only one place had it at all, and it was checked out. That was very frustrating.
