Animal Expo and Comic Con : : Feb. 23, '03
I went to the Unique Animal Expo and Pet Fair with Terence, Vanessa, Jane, and Jess. Unfortunately, I forgot to take my camera, so I only have the pictures that I took of aquisitions, afterwards. I wish I had -- there was a lady there carrying around a sloth! I am now in love with Geoffrey cats. They are small and scrappy and adorable, and wish to give me blood poisoning.
I'd also gone to the Expo with my mom on Saturday, as well as to a tack sale also located on the fairgrounds. On that day I purchased a male flower mantid (Tanzanian). His markings and the shape of his exoskeleton are absolutely gorgeous, and his eyes change colors, from white to purple.
The photos don't do him justice. I got him from the LLLReptile booth, and they also had African green mantids, which look a lot like the praying mantises you find around here; the flower mantids, much more fancy, are apparently a bit more hardy. I've seen him eat one cricket. He's perched up on his flower right now looking content; I wonder if he'll crawl down to eat the other crickets or not. I'm glad I bought him on Saturday. There were no mantids left on Sunday (I would've bought one of the greens if there were).
I actually went to the expo planning on buying an African giant black millipede. They didn't have any though, so I may just order one or two from LLL.
On Sunday, I went back to look at some fascinating bugs I'd seen the day before. I asked about their care and then bought one. She's wicked -- Ambilipygd, a giant cave spider (aka whip scorpion), an arachnid which is more closely related to scorpions than spiders.
I took many pictures of her, because she's photogenic. };=8> I bought her from a company called Cold Blooded Creations. She requires a cool, humid and dark environment, sort of like 'shrooms. Heh. Her antennae are incredible, about six inches long and flexible. She gently touches and pokes everything in her environment. I held her at the expo... she isn't venemous, and doesn't bite or pinch. I hope she flourishes.
My sister let out a crow of glee as we were leaving the herpetile area, "The rock man is here!" He was at the last expo (where I purchased Morgan, my poodle). We all five spent quite a while perusing his rocks. I bought Jess a gorgeous ammonite necklace (I may have to take a picture of that and tuck it in here), and bought myself an absolutely incredible moss agate slab with chalcedony. Vanessa and I also bought coprolite necklaces. Heh. Mine is turtle, hers was most likely beaver or sloth.
Pretty poo necklace!
After the expo, we went out to eat at an Indian restaurant we hadn't been to before -- and found out neither Jane nor Jess had ever had Indian! They had a delicious buffet. At this point, Jess' hand was looking rather nasty, so we decided it would be best to take her home before heading to the comic con.
When I had come home from the symphony with Terence and Vanessa on Saturday the 22nd (at which someone seated behind us had decided to die loudly and wetly during Beethoven), I found that Jess had gotten bit by Pickles, our cat, and had to go to urgent care. The next morning, it was still looking nasty and infected. (It was only a couple months ago *I* had blood poisoning from the same cat's bite!) Well, on Sunday, it was still spreading. She had to go to the doctor again, after we dropped her off.
We went to the comic con, and got there rather late, around 3:00 pm. We were on lookout for Alicia, a Gryphon Guilder who was going to be there. We didn't see her though, and might have missed her, which is really disappointing.
I spent way too much money at the comic con. I bought a large number of graphic novels: "Nookies" and "Wedgies" of the "Lenore" collection (I'd only had a few of the comics, and read from others' collections); "Something at the Window is Scratching" by Roman Dirge, the author of "Lenore"; and the second "Tank Girl" (to rebuild my collection which was lost). I also got "Nightmares and Fairytales #3" and a "Fraggle Rock" comic. Jess had given me money to buy her anything I thought she'd like, and I bought her a Kuronekosama pin (from "Trigun"), and figures of Darkside Heartless and Pluto from the Shadowhearts game. Darkside Heartless was cool and goth looking. Heh. I also (as I hang my head sheepishly) bought a Spike calendar that was half off.
After the comic con, Terence, Vanessa, Jane and I went to the Tao of Tea, and nibbled mochi ice cream, hummus and drank various teas.
Jess had to go to the ER when I got home that evening -- I insisted, since it was still spreading and she was scared. She has now had two scheduled bouts of infusion therapy since (as of Feb. 25) and the doctor has said to take her prescription and she should be okay. He thinks it was a staph infection, rather than a regular old cat bite infection, hence the resistance to antibiotics, coupled with the fact that since she's allergic to penicillin, they have to try things that aren't as effective.
