What is an affilation?
Affiliations are groups of people on the Forkni-L who align themselves to certain characters or concepts in the show "Forever Knight". Affiliations are also called "factions". Small factions or affiliation splinter-groups, or factions dedicated to a subset of another affiliation are sometimes called "fractions".
Originally, factions were formed for Fkfic-L Wars, a massive, friendly, round-robin fiction event. Different factions "attack" other affiliations in writing, usually with absurd pranks. However, now there are factions for just about everything and every character, and not all of them participate in Wars. Many are just for the group of people to discuss a favorite character or something they have in common.
To join a faction, generally one just declares themselves a member and/or puts it in their signatures. There may be a loop (e-mailing list) for the faction that members, or those interested, may join.
The factions in FK fandom are a lot more complicated than X Philes' 'Shippers and Friendshippers! So I'm employing the following key to faction descriptions:
